Youth Leaders and Organizers

(16 – 29 years)

Are your values rooted in justice and equity? Do you want to build a pipeline for action with the support of a community alongside you? Do you want tailored and proactive support for your leadership and advocacy goals?

  • “Top-down” youth leaders are defined within the YCoP as youth organizing & leading within the youth-serving sector through non-profits, charities, community foundations and other organized structured with financial and structural stability & sustainability

“Grass-roots” youth leaders are defined within the YCoP as youth organizing & leading on their own or on behalf of a local community, without financial or structural stability & sustainability. This is a fluid & flexible interpretation.

Allies & Accomplices

(Adults and Organizations)

Are your values rooted in justice and equity? Do you want to support the innate power of youth to build a pipeline to action? Are you willing to distribute and give away power and space for youth leadership? Are you able to acknowledge your colonial ways and learn to make way for indigenous and community-rooted ways of leadership & organizing?

Relations will be invited into this community, with self-identification of either Ally or Accomplice based on their level of engagement within the Community of Practice. There is emphasis on relationality of how we work with allies & accomplices – regardless of their age brackets. Rather than stating adult and organizational allies as “mentors,” they must actively identify the ways in which they can support the youth. This deviates away from a hierarchal power imbalance and innate ageism curated in the mentorship model.

  • An ally will mostly engage in activism by standing with an individual or group in a marginalized community. An accomplice will focus more on dismantling the structures that oppress that individual or group. The former is working with youth toward their access to representation, equity and justice. The latter is working on dismantling a structure, thereby striving for those same protections, but through a different kind of work. Both ally and accomplice work are crucial, working on the individual level will push us toward the equity in the present moment (ally), and working at the structural level will take a long view to reimagine and redesign oppressive social structures and to create a more equitable world (accomplice)
